NRS465 Applied Evidence-Based Project and Practicum: EBP and BSN-Prepared RN
Week 10 Discussion
DQ 1 Describe one internal and one external method for the dissemination of your evidence-based change proposal. For example, an internal method may be the hospital board, and an external method may be a professional nursing organization. Discuss why it is important to report your change proposal to both of these groups. How will your communication strategies change for each group?
Initial discussion question posts should be a minimum of 200 words and include at least two references cited using APA format. Responses to peers or faculty should be 100-150 words and include one reference. Refer to “RN-BSN DQ Rubric” and “RN-BSN Participation Rubric,” located in Class Resources, to understand the expectations for initial discussion question posts and participation posts, respectively.
DQ 2 Discuss why EBP is an essential component of the practice of a BSN-prepared RN. Include in your discussion how professional accountability affects EBP implementation and utilization. Identify two ways in which you will continue to integrate evidence into your practice and encourage it within your work environment. What obstacles could challenge this plan, and what steps will you take to minimize their impact?

Here’s how you might approach each discussion question for Week 10:
DQ 1: Internal and External Methods for Dissemination
Internal Method: One internal method for disseminating my evidence-based change proposal is presenting the findings at a hospital board meeting. This forum allows for direct communication with key decision-makers, including executives and department heads, who can support the implementation and ensure alignment with hospital priorities. It’s crucial to present clear, actionable data and recommendations to influence decision-making and secure necessary resources (Grol et al., 2013). Tailoring the presentation to highlight how the proposal aligns with organizational goals and demonstrating potential improvements in patient outcomes will help in gaining their support.
External Method: An external method for dissemination would be submitting the change proposal to a professional nursing organization, such as the American Nurses Association (ANA). This platform provides an opportunity to share the proposal with a broader audience of nursing professionals and researchers, fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration. By presenting the proposal at conferences or in professional journals, I can contribute to the broader nursing community’s understanding of effective practices and potentially influence practice standards on a national level (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018).
Importance and Communication Strategies: Reporting to both groups is important because it ensures that the proposal is not only implemented locally but also contributes to the wider nursing knowledge base. For the hospital board, the focus should be on practical outcomes and organizational benefits, using data and evidence to support the proposal. For the professional organization, the emphasis should be on the research and broader implications for nursing practice, using professional language and highlighting contributions to the field.

DQ 2: EBP and BSN-Prepared RN
Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is essential for BSN-prepared RNs because it ensures that nursing care is grounded in the best available evidence, leading to improved patient outcomes and enhanced care quality. EBP enables nurses to make informed decisions based on the latest research, clinical expertise, and patient preferences, thereby promoting more effective and efficient care (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018).
Professional Accountability and EBP: Professional accountability impacts EBP implementation by holding nurses responsible for incorporating current evidence into their practice. It requires continuous learning and adaptation to new research findings, ensuring that care delivery remains up-to-date and effective (White et al., 2021). Accountability fosters a culture of excellence and drives the pursuit of high standards in patient care.
Integration and Encouragement Strategies:
- Continuing Education: I will integrate evidence into my practice by actively participating in ongoing education and training programs that focus on the latest research and advancements in nursing. This will help me stay current with evidence-based guidelines and practices.
- Mentorship and Collaboration: I will encourage EBP within my work environment by mentoring colleagues and fostering a collaborative culture where evidence-based discussions and shared learning are prioritized. This includes facilitating journal clubs or case discussions to review and apply recent research findings.
Potential Obstacles: Challenges may include resistance to change from colleagues or limited access to updated research resources. To address these, I will advocate for institutional support for EBP initiatives and seek opportunities for professional development. Creating a supportive environment that values evidence-based practices can help overcome resistance and promote ongoing integration of research into practice (Grol et al., 2013).
