Children behave similarly as adults in that they feel frustrated when their environment is restricted, or when it is difficult to access what they need. Teachers have a crucial role in making sure the classroom layout is thoughtfully designed and organized with materials to play. This project lesson outlines how to design a high quality, well organized, and language infused early childhood classroom for kindergarteners. It introduces several design elements that foster some sense of comfort in toddlers and invite engagement and exploration. The design also investigate how to organize learning materials for easy use, independence and learning.

In a preschool classroom setting, there is need for group activities, storage, display, and privacy places.
Group activities places
Despite children learning primarily through playing there is need to plan for areas where they can hold group activities or meetings. Story times and morning meetings enhances literacy skills and build the classroom community. The block area may be used for such activities in a small classroom environment while library/music or movement areas can work well for group activities.
