NRS465 Applied Evidence-Based Project and Practicum: Barriers to Sustaining Evidence-Based Practice Change
Week 9 Discussion
DQ 1 Discuss one personal strength and one weakness you have regarding professional presentations. Name one method for improvement for each of these, and discuss why it is important for you to improve on these skills based on self-awareness if you want to present your findings in a more formal setting.
Initial discussion question posts should be a minimum of 200 words and include at least two references cited using APA format. Responses to peers or faculty should be 100-150 words and include one reference. Refer to “RN-BSN DQ Rubric” and “RN-BSN Participation Rubric,” located in Class Resources, to understand the expectations for initial discussion question posts and participation posts, respectively.
DQ 2
Sustaining change can be difficult, as there are many variables that can affect implementation. One critical component of EBP is to ensure that practice change is part of an organization’s culture so it will continue to impact outcomes over time. Name two potential barriers that may prevent your evidence-based change proposal from continuing to obtain the same desired results 6 months to a year from now and your strategies for overcoming these challenges.

Here’s a response for each discussion question for Week 9:
DQ 1: Personal Strengths and Weaknesses in Professional Presentations
Strength: One personal strength I have regarding professional presentations is my ability to clearly articulate complex information. I am skilled at breaking down detailed research findings into easily understandable segments, which helps my audience grasp the key points without feeling overwhelmed. This strength is particularly valuable in healthcare settings where diverse audiences, including clinicians and non-clinicians, need to understand evidence-based findings to support clinical decision-making.
Weakness: A weakness I face is anxiety during public speaking, which sometimes affects my confidence and overall delivery. Despite knowing my material well, I often feel nervous, which can lead to rushed speech or missed points. One method for improvement is to engage in more practice and seek constructive feedback. Practicing in front of small, supportive groups can help build confidence and refine my presentation skills. Additionally, incorporating relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or mindfulness, before presentations can help manage anxiety and improve my composure (Ratanasiripong et al., 2015).
Improving presentation skills is crucial as self-awareness allows for continuous professional growth, ensuring that when I present my findings in formal settings, my delivery is clear, confident, and engaging. Effective communication not only enhances the impact of the presentation but also fosters better understanding and acceptance of the evidence-based changes being proposed.

DQ 2: Barriers to Sustaining Evidence-Based Practice Change
Two potential barriers that may prevent my evidence-based change proposal from maintaining the desired results 6 months to a year from now are:
1. Staff Turnover: High turnover rates among nursing staff can disrupt the continuity of practice changes, as new staff may not be fully trained or committed to the established protocols. This can lead to inconsistent application of the intervention, ultimately affecting patient outcomes. To overcome this challenge, it is essential to integrate the practice change into the organization’s onboarding and continuous education programs. Ensuring that all new and existing staff receive ongoing training and reinforcement of the practice change can help sustain the desired outcomes over time (Waldron et al., 2019).
2. Lack of Ongoing Monitoring and Feedback: Without consistent monitoring and feedback, it is easy for staff to revert to old habits or for compliance to diminish over time. This lack of accountability can undermine the sustainability of the change. To address this barrier, implementing regular audits, feedback sessions, and performance metrics can help maintain momentum and adherence. Engaging staff through recognition programs for compliance and improvement can also motivate continued commitment to the change.
Sustaining change is vital for long-term improvements in patient care, and embedding EBP into the organization’s culture ensures that the changes are not just temporary fixes but become ingrained in everyday practice.
